Burglars target homes they think are empty so it’s important that you try to make your homes look occupied.

Houses are generally broken into from the rear because the burglar doesn’t want to be seen so people should make it as difficult as possible to access their back garden. Tall fencing, noisy gravel, spiky hedges and an alarm system are all worth the investment. And of course, windows and doors should always be locked when there is no one at home.

Last winter, there were 961 burglaries in the Cambridgeshire area during the four months, from November to February, with 224 in November, 227 in December, 296 in January and 214 in February.

Other crime prevention measures include:

*Remove keys from window and door locks, but keep them in a familiar and safe place where all members of the family know where to find them in the event of an emergency.

*Never leave items such as keys, bags and money on show through a window, as these can prove a real temptation for an opportunist burglar.

*Consider the position of key racks or shelves next to doors and ensure that they cannot be reached through the letter box.

*Use timer switches to turn on lights and radios when you are going to be away from your house at dusk.

*Consider the use of lights at the front and rear of your property that are activated when someone approaches.

*Consider the use of bolts and padlocks on side gates. Place the bolts at the top, middle and bottom of the gate, as just a top bolt might be easy to reach and open.

Secure Your Property – Redlocks Locksmiths

Statistics show that burglaries increase by up to 20% during the winter months when the clocks change as criminals take advantage of the darker evenings. Here are a few of  Redlocks basic pointers in keeping your family and property safer.

Doors and windows
It’s important that your door security is up to standard during the dark winter months. External timber doors should be secured using a Mortice Lock and/or Nightlatch that meets British Standard and if you have a UPVC or composite door then it is a good idea to upgrade the euro profile cylinder in your multipoint lock to a British Standard cylinder as well.
A property is not properly protected unless all points of entry are secured and Redlocks Locksmiths recommends that all windows, both upstairs and downstairs, are fitted with at least one appropriate lock. Many burglars will avoid smashing a window and will instead try to force the window frame itself. There are locks available for all types of windows, including wooden, aluminium and UPVC, as well as locks that are suitable for French doors and patio doors.

Sheds and outbuildings
It’s important not to forget sheds garages during the winter months. You can secure these outbuildings with a weatherproof padlock to help deter would-be thieves and protect against unwanted intruders. Weatherproof padlocks with a solid multi-layered steel body to protect against erosion and saw attack, plus a keyway cover cap to prevent rusting. Heavy-duty padlocks are recommended for shed doors, whilst anchor locks and cables can secure individual items of high value inside an outbuilding.

Security Checklist for University Students

Whether they are going to university for the first time, or returning to study for another year, students will often find themselves in new accommodation – from halls of residence to private rented flats or houses.

Students are one of the highest at-risk groups of crime in the country, often targeted for high value laptops, TVs, and entertainment equipment which are frequently left in plain view and unsecured against intruders. It’s important, therefore, that students are aware of how to keep themselves and their possessions safe.

Safety and security should be top of the agenda for students when they move into a new property, or return to their old digs, as dealing with the effects of crime is a very unsettling and distressing experience. By carrying out these simple measures to maintain a safe and secure property, we can put students’ (and parents’) minds at ease.

It is all too easy to assume that previous residents have handed in their keys and while this may well be the case, it does not mean that extra copies have not been made by either former residents, employees, contractors or even rogue tradesmen. It is important for students and parents to question what locking systems are in place, when they were last replaced and how the copying of keys is controlled.

It is landlord’s’ duty to act in a responsible manner and they should install quality locks with patented keys which cannot be copied without proof of ownership or restricted keys which cannot be easily copied due to their unique design.
